Athens was the largest and most powerful Greek state. It was a city with lots of beautiful public buildings, shops and public baths.  A walk around Athens takes in highlights spread over millennia: from the Neolithic period to the Classical, Roman and Byzantine eras.  The city is still dominated by 5th-century BC landmarks, including the Acropolis, a hilltop citadel topped with ancient buildings like the colonnaded Parthenon temple.
